Find the best Barnet walks. The Ramblers Association now have a greatly improved website which is an exceptional resource for all walkers, hikers and young families wanting to go for walks with young children. This site lists everything from historical walks to leader led walks to any really arduous walks within the Moss Hall Infant School area.

Find A Walk Near Me by Walking Britain is a truly excellent and free resource. Just enter where you are or where you would like to walk - and print out directions. The walks are graded and you can buy a specific map of the area at the same time. These are proper OS maps and weather proofed if required.

I always think of walking as one of the few activities you can do for free - and now you can with this guide!

Walking, Hiking and Outdoor Shops

Homebase - London North Finchley

679 High Rd, North Finchley, London N12 0DA, UK – 0345 640 7588

Today I helped an elderly lady widow family friend who has no car, to visit Homebase North Finchley Garden Centre. Good help for parking time overstay issue, but too long wait for heavy lifting assistance. - I gave a lift to the old lady to Homebase. I parked the car in the Homebase car park and returned about an hour later when the lady was almost ready to return home. She bought a very heavy outdoor pot vase which I could not lift. I sometimes get lower back pain. Customer Service CS called for staff assistance several times, eventually a staff man arrived about 45+min later to help. This meant I had overstayed at the car park (limit 90min) . CS took my reg and name and said they would process me as a visitor and I would not be charged for parking. Good. I then took the elderly lady and her vase and other homebase shopping to her home in the local area. The lady's shopping was about £100 but was not entitled to free local delivery. She did not want to pay the £10 or so (depending on number of people needed to carry items) for delivery. 1. Watch out for parking time camera, fines arrive by post. If in doubt see CS before you leave. 2. Give plenty of time for assistance in your 90 min parking time limit or tell CS you car reg and your name, and take their name for reference. Please check current parking notice for accurate up-to-date information. I think Homebase has offers on certain days.

The staff here is very friendly and helpful. However the selection of construction supplies isn't as big as in larger DIY superstores. I appreciate the staff's honesty for telling me they don't have what I need and sending me somewhere else rather than trying to sell me something that may be similar but wouldn't do the job properly.

Robert Dyas North Finchley

730-732 High Rd, North Finchley, London N12 9QD, UK – 020 8445 1932

Staff extremely helpful. Very customer focused and they all seemed to get on well with each other. Great deals on at the moment

A great shop for products for the home. Whether you are a DIYer or just want to enhance your kitchen, garden, bathroom, etc. Go here.

Sports Direct London - Friern Barnet

A, Friern Bridge Retail Park, Pegasus Way, London, Friern Barnet N11 3PW, UK – 0344 332 5163

Has some good bargains. If you looking for some decent stuff for the gym or other sports the will have what you need. But remember this is not footlocker or JD so when it comes to the latest and greatest and ridiculously expensive trainers they won't have them here.

WalkingWorld.jpg
Another good one. Walkingworld has huge library of guides with a good selection of walks, of varying lengths and grades, pretty well anywhere in the UK. The walks come in an excellent format making them very easy to follow, with photographs to illustrate every important decision point and a proper Ordnance Survey map.

A modist annual subscription gives you unlimited access to all the walks. However you can Pay As Go by downloading indiviual walks.

Crucially you can also find walks France, Spain, Norway, Portugal and Australia!

Snake bites

Most snake bites in the UK are not serious. But it's important to get all snake bites checked as soon as possible.

Call 999 or go to A&E immediately if:

  • you think you, or someone else, has been bitten by a snake

Find your nearest A&E

Information:

If you're not in the UK when you are bitten by a snake, contact the emergency medical services in the country you're in.

Get foreign travel advice on GOV.UK

What to do while you're waiting for help

Do

  • stay calm, most snake bites in the UK are not serious and can be treated

  • keep the part of your body that was bitten as still as you can

  • lie in the recovery position if you can

  • take paracetamol for any pain

  • try to remember the colour and pattern of the snake to tell the doctor

  • take off any jewellery and loosen clothes near the bite, in case it swells

Don’t

  • do not go near the snake, or try to catch or kill it

  • do not try to suck or cut the poison (venom) out of the bite

  • do not tie anything tightly round the part of the body where the bite is

  • do not take aspirin or ibuprofen, as they can make bleeding worse

What happens at the hospital

You will usually need to stay in hospital for at least 24 hours if you have been bitten by a snake.

The bite will be cleaned and bandaged. You may be given an injection to help protect you from tetanus.

If you were bitten by a poisonous (venomous) snake you will be treated with a medicine to fight the venom. This is given through a thin tube into a vein, called a drip.

Types of UK snake

Only 3 types of snake are found in the wild in the UK.

The adder is the only venomous snake, but you should get all snake bites checked as soon as possible.

Telling the doctors the colour and pattern of the snake that bit you could help them treat it.
